Daniel Jacob "Dan" Radcliffe (born July 23, 1989) is an English actor and producer best known for his role as the titular character in the Harry Potter film franchise, which he portrayed for 10 years from 2001 to 2011
Early Career (1999-2001)[]
Radcliffe desired to become an actor at the age of 5. In 1999, he landed his first television role of Young David in the BBC's adaptation of David Copperfield after his mother's friend secured him an audition, followed by his film debut in 2001 with The Tailor of Panama as Mark Pendel.
Harry Potter stardom (2001-2011)[]
In 2000, he met David Heyman while at the theatre with his father. Heyman encouraged Radcliffe to audition for the role of Harry Potter. Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films recalled seeing him in David Copperfield and said, "This is what I want. This is Harry Potter". Eight months and several auditions later, Radcliffe got the role. However, his parents turned it down at first as it would be involving the filming of six films in LA. Warner Bros offered him a two-movie deal in the UK and it was unsure that he would film more than two Potter films. During the filming of the Potter franchise, he also appeared playing himself in Extras (2006), the Australian family drama film December Boys (2007) as Maps opposite Teresa Palmer, and John "Jack" Kipling in the biographical television film My Boy Jack (2007). In 2010 and 2011, he appeared for the final time playing the titular character in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Additionally, he had reprised his role as Harry in the motion-based dark ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, located in the Wizarding World section in the Universal theme parks.
Other Work Post Potter (2012-present)[]
After the Potter series, he went to star as Arthur Kipps in the horror The Woman in Black (2012), beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the biographical film Kill Your Darlings (2013), med school dropout Wallace in the Irish Canadian romantic comedy What If (2013). He then went on to star in the dark fantasy horror film Horns as Ig Perrish that same year. He was seen in the science fiction horror film Victor Frankenstein (2015) as Igor. Also in 2015, he played Sam Houser in the BBC docudrama film The Gamechangers and played The Dog Walker in Trainwreck. In 2016, he starred as Walter Maybry in the action-adventure film Now You See Me 2, Manny in the indie film Swiss Army Man, Nate Foster in the independent film Imperium. In 2017, he was seen as himself in Lost in London, and as Yossi Ghinsberg in the physiological thriller Jungle. He played Sean Haggerty in Beast of Burden (2018), Miles in Guns Akimbo (2019), and played multiple characters in the TBS anthology series Miracle Workers (2019-2023), which also he executive produced and starred in the 2020 Australian prison film Escape from Pretoria as Tim Jenkin, and as Prince Fredrick in the Netflix interactive special, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. The Reverend (2020)
He reunited with the cast and crew of the Harry Potter films for the 20th anniversary special Harry Potter: 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts (2022). That same year, he went to star That same year, he starred in the musical parody film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story as musician Weird Al Yankovic, which earned Radcliffe a BAFTA TV and Emmy Award nominations, and portrayed Abigail Fairfax in the adventure comedy The Lost City (2022). In addition, he has hosted Saturday Night Live in 2012, and the British game show, Have I Got News for You (2012, 2015). A lifelong fan of The Simpsons, he lent his voice to characters such as Edmund, Digby Diggs, and himself, as well as voicing characters in Robot Chicken (2012, 2017), BoJack Horseman (2015). Other voice credits include as detective Rex Dasher in Playmobile: The Movie (2019), one of the Knights of the Sun in Rick and Morty (2022), Sebastian Lines in an episode of Digman! (2023), and as King Jeremey in the animated apocalyptic sitcom Mulligan (2023) and is set to appear in the film Batso as Dean Caldwell and is also rumored to be returning as Walter Maybry for Now You See Me 3.
West End, Broadway & Off-Broadway (2007-present)[]
Radcliffe has also branched out to stage roles as well during his career including Equus, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Lifespan of a Fact, Privacy, and more recently, starred in the revival of Off Broadway and Broadway productions of Merrily We Roll Along. Radcliffe's numerous awards on stage include WhatsOnStage Award for Best Actor, 6 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, a first time Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as lyricist and playwright Charley Kringas. He has also been nominated for 4 Drama Desk Awards, 4 Drama League Awards, and 2 Outer Critics Choice Awards.
Personal Life[]
He met Michigan-born actress Erin Darke on the set on his film Kill Your Darlings, where the two began dating and splits his time between Fulham and the West Village of New York City and are parents to a son, born in April 2023.
